Other Optional Activities

Winter Haiku Snow Globes- students learned about Haiku poems first by watching BrainpopJr video on poems. We clapped out syllables in our names and the samples is the video. We then made a list of winter words in Kidspiration in three categories(nouns, verbs, adjectives) to help with the writing process and clapped out many. Then in Word children wrote poems about winter. Several were modeled by teacher first. Then students centered text and printed. I cut out poems and glued to bases of globes. The following week we used a template for the globe (black circle) to illustrate poem. They printed and cut out and assembled.

Seasons Slideshow Kid Pix- children create four slides, one for each season. THey may choose a premade background or show off their artisic talents by hand. They write a few sentences about the season and what they like to do in each one. They make a cover and use stamps for each corner. Next they go to the slideshow zone and insert the five pictures into the frames. They learn how to choose transitions, timing, and sounds. We print it in comic book view so that up to 6 slides print on one page.

My Family Kidspiration-in the beginning of the year I use this project to get to know the kids. They fill in the text and add pictures of their choice. Some like to add a person to represent each family member, others just make a home picture.

Handprint Turkeys-Using their hand as a guide they trace left hand with the drawing tools in Kid Pix. Use bucket tool to fill in feathers with bright color patterns. Add facial features of turkey and legs. Have students write a speech bubble for their turkey or a sentence describing their turkey. One year I then made into quicktime slideshow with all the turkeys. You could also record their voices and use as a voicethread.
